Others created fake websites and pages with links back to their own - not the phrase "their own" - commercial products - thus creating a need for Google and other search engines to objectively create quality ranking scores to determine the relationship between linking sites. At that time, the search engines were not looking at these items such as which reciprocal links were owned by the same group or which chain of anchored links were on the same machine. In order to thwart spammers, this information is collected and analyzed as it's rather important for determining exactly who the spammers are.

Perhaps one of the most important parts of the backlinking process is which keywords one uses - traditionally, this has been where most linking efforts have hit the wall.

Why? We can't specifically tell others to use such and such an anchor text in their link to us. And in direct contradiction to what you might be reading around the net, therein lies a big part of the problem, right?

Also, since as a casual reader, you are not likely to be an expert on niche market keywords, you are going to most logically try to pick the keywords having the most traffic. One could however be forgiven for this as it really is a most logical mistake. A brand new online venture, even after being indexed by MSN or most search engines, doesn't stand a prayer for getting traffic based on the most highly trafficked keywords - sorry but this wait for traffic could extend to many months or even years.

Ergo, have we looked at a potentially time wasting effort here?

But there is yet another major issue. The page rank of new articles is N/A or after indexing, typically Zero where Zero is not good and 10 is the best. Some may say differently while a new page with N/A or O as its rank will have a freshness quotient that can help it positively, in most search engines, its zero which is evidence of lack of credibility will assuredly work against it.

Exceptions abound however and if the newly created page is sitting on a very popular Web 2 social network property like squidoo or craigslist, bebo or scribd to name a few then it won't be penalized as much just because its current pagerank or credibility level appears to be a zero.

We suspect these exceptions work because, it is thought that new pages on foundation sites such as those with a PageTrust of 5 or above, inherently acquire some of the PageRank or PageTrust of the site that they are actually hosted on.

All sounds rather complicated huh? What really, does one do ?

Google's time worn advice, go back to fundamentals, ensure that you are putting up great and get creative. They would recommend strongly that we even create "link-bait" that will cause others to want to link to you.I like both this phrase and the thought if you have any idea what this link-bait thing means. Its never a great idea to truly ignore what Google recommends, however I urge you to examine the issues involved in creating link-bait more deeply. Do you really have the 6-18 months that it takes to consistently create new articles almost daily, and to put out such a ferocious amount of high grade material in one spot that would cause people to consistently put a link to that page from their own - If the answer is yes, then you now know the true meaning of link-bait.

You really need to have a think about what phrases people might use to get to your site.

You don't want to be taking chances with this. You don't want to assume you know which keyword phrases are used by people wanting your websites (or more correctly, the keyword phrases people are using to find solutions to the particular problem they are trying to solve). You really want to know for sure that the keyword phrases you use are correct for your market.

In fact I am constantly surprised by some of the phrases people use when searching. Spelling mistakes are common, abbreviations are often used, punctuation can be used inappropriately, etc. The good news is that there are a number of things you can do here.

Firstly you could do some experimentation with the search engines yourself and use all the keyword phrases you think should be used to find products in your niche. Go to the search engine and type them in and have a look at the results. Are the sites that are returned relevant to your niche?

In other words if you positioned yourself in that area would people searching in those categories find your websites content relevant (it goes without saying that you have great content, right?).

If the answer is yes and you think you would find it relevant, jot down the keyword phrase.

Also take a note of the number of sponsored links (advertisers) usually listed on the right or top of the search engine results (usually it explicitly mentions they are sponsored links). The actual number is important because too few could mean that perhaps the keyword phrase is not commonly used (but it could also mean you have found a golden nugget, that is a particular keyword phrase that is being used but not being actively targeted by Advertisers).

When considering finding out more about pay per click marketing; it pays to do a little research first as a good way to move forward fast!

Too many sponsored results may mean the keyword phrase is heavily used and it may be expensive to get your sponsored links working (but again this could be a golden opportunity for you).

In general the search engines put the sponsored link that has bid the most money at the top of the list, so a quick way to ensure your up front is to pay the most (and bid more than your opposition).

However bear in mind as well, that the search engines also sort-sponsored links by the click through rate (CTR), in other words the number of times a sponsored link is clicked versus the number of times it is shown on screen in search engine results.

A sponsored link with a higher CTR indicates that more people are clicking that link, and you will find a sponsored link with a high CTR will rank higher in many cases that other sponsored links even if they have bid less money. So it is possible to have your cake and eat it to (or in this case to bid a smaller amount and have you sponsored link appear higher than your competitors who are paying more for their ad's than you are!).

Of course to do this (get a higher CTR than other sponsored links) you need to draw attention to your ad, so your content (ad) must be more compelling than your competitors. Given the lack of space in these ads you need to be really creative to get your link clicked on more often than your competitors (even if your happy paying more than your competitors per click).

The number one sponsored link is not always going to be clicked more often than other ads, especially if it does not give the person more of a reason to want to click it, than the ads near it.

Whatever you do, don't just set-up a PPC campaign and leave it unchecked. Even if your having some success, make sure you go into the campaign details by logging into the search engine website for PPC marketers, and then check out the stats regularly to see how you are going because things can change very quickly as new competitors come into the marketplace.

You need to be continually checking your keywords, CTR's of your ads, and fine tuning and tweaking to run things optimally. I am not suggesting this needs to be daily, but it just depends on your particular campaign and your niche.

This is probably a good place to discuss link tracking on your website.

You can purchase software that gets installed onto your website that makes it really quite easy to see the traffic coming to your website and where it originates. It's a good idea to do this to work out how much traffic your getting from your various sources (PPC, free Google search, press releases, etc).

The other reason why you want to be checking your ads frequently is that over time you will certainly find some ads performing better than others. You can see at one glance the CTR of your various ads, but also with link tracking it's possible to work out the ads that are actually making you money (people are actually buying off the ad in higher proportions to other ads).

PPC is a fantastic way to get instant traffic to your website, just make sure you are doing your sums and keeping track of your expenditure and of course checking your ads regularly as well as what your competitors are doing and offering.

A few days ago, I wrote an article that was republished a number of times around the internet. In it I detailed a little bit of the angst being felt by people who had been banned or suspended while diddling around in the social network - Facebook.

To a lot of people this is really a non-issue, much to do about nothing. But to the 100 Million who inhabit the fastest growing social network and the several tens of millions who now spend more time inside facebook than around the rest of the internet, this is quite a serious topic. You volunteer to send out 400 invitations to your facebook friends on behalf of your boss and your boss smiles and you hear him say, wow Jim is a real go getter. You can banned after sending only 60 messages and yo partner, your now in trouble...

So, let me see if I got this right - 580 cherished friends of your mother-in-law didn't get their invite and you just got suspended from facebook while in this, the most tedious of chores. Better come straight with your mother-in-law right away, because facebook does not lift suspensions in any "reasonable" time-frame. And as for outright bans, if you were given one of those unjustly, you can try their dispute resolution email, however for all intents and purposes you are better off kissing that account goodbye.

And let us not forget that commercial class of people feeling deep business angst over having lost their list of 3-4000 prospects. Sometimes these are the mom and pop type companies who have decided to use facebook for marketing and sometimes these are sizable mid-sized corporations getting overly aggressive with their grassroots marketing or surveying. In any case, the loss of the profile also means no contact with the prospective customer base.

In that article, I wrote a little about the facebook warning messages which I and many others consider quite bland. I detailed in vivid language that I personally felt that for such an important thing, they facebook could have done a little better in terms of bringing the urgency of the situation to their members.

Ignorance of the Law is no excuse and in the case of Facebook, a faceless engine in the background deems certain activity looks like spam according to their filters and suddenly you are out of there. Odd that on a social network you can get banned for that, but there you go. Facebook has a chat facility and they would rather you use that rather than abuse the email in that way. Promotion of racism, hate mail or any of the regular sort of utterances that would have gotten you in trouble outside of facebook too. People engaging in this thing shouldn't be surprised if their accounts are permanently suspended.

And my personal favorites: Spamming your own facebook group 3 or more times per day. After getting a warning, keep doing what you were doing prior. Sending add requests to more than two hundred people that you dont know in one day.

Generally, it would appear that there are two classes of evil that can get one banned or suspended from facebook. Nudity and stealing images and other such types of activity is one class of activity.

The other class of activity is time based. Sending 400 emails in a month is generally ok. Sending 400 emails all in one day is not. When you get a warning about a certain activity, lets say it was writing on walls, you are NOT told how long before you can continue that activity.

Most of the above sins fall into two groups. Either blatant lack of social etiquette or a time based limit that has been exceeded. Inviting two hundred strangers to be your friend in 2 weeks is allowed, but not if done in 30 minutes. If you do run into a problem there is a resolution email on the site but the guys there are really pretty busy.
