How I Optimize Our Sites

I have been working to optimize our company's search engine. It seems intuitive that the content of the website is the controlling factor when generating search hit results. I believed that some combination of content, keywords and meta tags could be formulized to guarantee top placement in a list of Google search results.

But that is apparently not the case. Content, keywords and meta tags do not seem relevant to top placement on Google searches. Many SEO experts believe that link building is the best SEO stratagem. Backlinks from other sites seem to play a prominent role in Google's search results. I then decided to focus on backlinks.

There are several strategies for getting backlinks to your site. A very popular method is the use of an online catalogue known as a web directory. Web directories collect links to outside sides and list them in sorted categories according to site content. Some web directories are free, some charge a listing fee, and some require you to backlink to their own site in return. You can either use a directory submission tool to contact web directories, or hire a third party submission service to do this for you.

I used a free directory submission tool to submit my site to almost 2000 web directories. These tools have a built-in database of directories, so I didn't have to search them out myself and the entire process took only a few days. The tool also allowed me to use different anchor texts and descriptions for my site, so each submission looked unique. After submission, my site went to the directories' validation queue. This process takes days or even weeks, so don't expect instant improvements in your Google search ranking.

Another good way to generate backlinks is to post a comment to a blog on WordPress Blogs. To post a comment, WordPress Blogs requires you to provide your name, your URL and your e-mail address. So if you use your keywords as your name, and your site address as your URL, then when your comment is posted it becomes an instant backlink to your website. But posting on an irrelevant blog or leaving an irrelevant comment only to get a backlink could be considered spamming, and I don't condone that. Only post if you have a comment to make, and only on an article relevant to your business. I only posted comments in blogs that were relevant to our company's business, and only when I had a relevant comment to make. Comments that have already been posted by others will give you an idea of what sort of comment you should leave.
