The concept of SEO or Search Engine Optimization is one of improving the quality and or the volume of traffic that a website receives through organic search engine results. This is a difference concept when compared to marketing as organic results are free and one does not have to pay for the traffic other then the traditional costs associated with maintaining the website.

One can look at Search Engine Optimization as a very broad concept. You can quite easily target any type of visitor to a website, but this will not make you any money. By targeting specific visitors who live in a particular region or who are looking for a particular product, service or idea, you can make money through virtually any website.

For the most part, Search Engine Optimization should be kept separate from the other forms of marketing as it is in most cases considered to be an unpaid form of marketing. It is however, still a form of marketing which will help you to target specific groups of people to your website.

There are many people out there today who are very good at optimizing websites. As a result, many Search Engine Optimization services have been made available in recent years. While you may pay for these services, you are not paying the search engines directly which still constitutes SEO as an unpaid marketing technique.

In the performance of SEO, one modifies many different aspects of their website in order to improve their rankings. Some of these aspects revolve around the words used in the content of the pages while other aspects focus solely on the HTML code of the website.

Search Engine Optimization can be split into 3 distinct classifications. These are known as the black, gray and white hat techniques. The white hate techniques are considered to be the honest forms of SEO whereas the black hat techniques are an attempt to fool the search engines into a better ranking. Gray hat techniques make use of a little of both.

Adversarial Information Retrieval on the Web was developed in 2005 as a means of fighting the consistent spamming of the internet. This group has successfully determined what one can consider to be an aggressive SEO technique and what is an honest one. As a result of this group, those webmasters who are using dishonest SEO techniques are being found and their traffic is getting banned from the search engines.
