China Nine Liberty 37 - This is a baffling Western in which railroad tycoons show mercy to a man from gallows in trade for killing another gunfighter. The gunfighter's girl falls for the murderer and helps do his wicked work. Title refers to the signpost giving distance to 2 close-by towns. Cast includes Warren Oates, Fabio Testi, Jenny Agutter, and Sam Peckinpah. (102 minutes, 1978)
House Springs - Having just been abandoned by his fiance Driver, British actor Firth heads to the United States and falls for Graham. Then, wouldn't you know it, Minnie shows up. There are great acting jobs from everyone, although not enough chuckles for a romantic comedy. The film is based on the novel New Cardiff by Charles Webb. Cast includes Colin Firth, Heather Graham, Minnie Driver, Mary Steenburgen, Oliver Platt, and. (92 minutes, 2003)
Basic - While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to query the surviving members of the squad, whose stories don't add up. Essentially a whodunit, this film keeps us guessing, as a good conspiracy should. Cast includes John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly, Roselyn Sanchez, and Harry Connick. (2003 minutes, 1995)
Strange Interlude - A Eugene O'Neill drama that displays the tangled web of the differentiation between our thoughts and our words. Norma Shearer is cast as a woman who lost the love of her life when he was shot down in WWI. The movie speaks of romances and marriages between Nina and three men, only one of whom she loves. It is about growing old without settling their complications. This is a preoccupying movie, with Shearer at her talented best. The cast list includes Norma Shearer, Clark Gable, Might Robson, Maureen O'Sullivan, Robert Youthful, Ralph Morgan, Henry B. Walthall, and Alexander Kirkland. (110 minutes, 1932)
On Guard - A loyal swordsman saves a child princess from the wicked grasp of her mean rival. The tot's dad was also the swordsman's guru. A appealingly old-styled popcorn movie that is full of action and set in the France of Louis XIV. Cast includes Daniel Auteuil, Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Perez, Marie Gillain, Yann Collette, Didier Pang, and Philippe Noiret. (128 minutes, 1997)
Jerry Maguire - Jerry is an agent for a top Sports Management group. When he is terminated, he expects his client to come along with him as he sets out on his own. All of a sudden Jerry realizes that he has no sincere friends in this aggressive, dog eat dog, business. Down to one client and one assistant, Jerry fights to build himself a business.
The Last Time I Saw Archie - Webb's solitary try at comedy is less ridiculous than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had authentic potential, and Mitchum pleasingly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
